Sterling O. McLaughlin, 93, of Raeford, departed this life on Friday, May 14, 2021.A private memorial service will be held on May 22, 2021, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness – Raeford-English Congregation.

“O’Neil”, as he was fondly known by many, was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley A. McLaughlin, with whom he was married for 69 years until her death January 2, 2017; father and mother, Lawrence Elwell McLaughlin Sr. and Hattie Mae McLaughlin; sisters, Mary Florence Clanton and Lillie Mae Franklin; brothers, Lawrence E. Jr., Hubert W., Richard W., and John D. (J.D.).
Surviving to cherish his memory are: son, Sterling L. McLaughlin (Francine), Roanoke, VA; son Archie E. (Marie), Wallace, NC & Boston, MA; daughter, Lanette M. Barnes (Bartholomew), Raeford, NC; and son, Terry D. McLaughlin, Raeford, NC. Also, surviving are brothers Roscoe G., Raeford, NC, Lewis O., Heidelberg, Germany, and Julius K. (Linda), Greensboro, NC,13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
O’Neil was born in Raeford, NC and upon graduating, he and his high school sweetheart, Shirley A. McLaughlin, married and later moved to Greensboro, NC, where they raised a family. He was a hard worker and a dedicated husband and father. Among his many endeavors, he particularly enjoyed collecting antiques, culminating in the antique business he owned and operated for many years. He also enjoyed building, general construction, and furniture making. As much as anything, he enjoyed people. He never met a stranger and others gravitated to him for his wit, wisdom, and inspiring words.
Upon returning to Raeford, he was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness and remained a faithful member until his death.
