James Henderson Hines

James Henderson Hines, affectionately known by his family as “Jenk,” was born March 31, 1939, and raised in the Oak Hill Community of Scotland County. James went home peacefully into the arms of his Heavenly Father on January 9, 2025, at James J. Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, NY. 

James is preceded in death by his parents, John C. Hines Sr. and Beulah McNair Hines; his eldest son, James Andre Hines; two brothers, John C. Hines Jr. and Angus McNair Hines Sr; a sister, Veloise Hines; and two nieces and a nephew. 

At an early age, James confessed Christ and joined Spring Branch Missionary Baptist Church. In recent years, he has loved viewing services virtually from his residence in New York.

James was educated in the Public Schools of Scotland County.  As a young man, he moved to New York City. While there, he joined the United States Army. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division, 508th Infantry Regiment, and was deployed to the Dominican Republic Civil War. James excelled in the Army and quickly rose through the ranks. He specialized in infantry, a role that only a small fraction of Black soldiers serve even today. He was also a Paratrooper and displayed immense courage and resilience, participating in numerous parachute jumps. He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and the Parachutist Badge for his honorable service. When James completed his military service, he returned to New York and became an ambitious and driven entrepreneur. He ran many business ventures over the years until retirement.

James leaves to cherish his memory: his daughter, Tamisha Hines of Myrtle Beach, SC; three sons, Derrick Hines of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Aaron Hines of New York, NY; Danzel Hines of Bronx, NY; four sisters, Beulah Joyce (Eugene) Robinson of Sandy Springs, GA; Edna (David) Copeland of Laurinburg, NC; Carolyn (Stephen) Huger of Stone Mountain, GA; Sondra (Hebert) Swann of Laurinburg, NC; one brother, Simuel Hines (Estella Hayes) of Wagram, NC; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, 17 nephews and nieces; and a host of great and great-great nephews and nieces, cousins, and friends.

James was smooth, like a quiet storm. He could play a laid-back game of golf or lead a lively conversation with family and friends. He lived each moment to the fullest. His love, resilience, and ability to face every challenge with an unyielding fighting spirit serve as an example for us all to live by. Even in his final days, James's fighting spirit remained unbroken, leaving a legacy of courage and hope to all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Spring Branch Missionary Baptist Church. A viewing and visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery-Hines Annex. Services are entrusted to Purcell Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
