Ernest McDougald Jr.

Ernest McDougald Jr.'s sunrise was on November 30, 1923 in Laurinburg, NC. He concluded his earthly journey on April 11, 2017. He was born and raised in Laurinburg, NC by his parents, Ernest McDougald Sr. and Fannie McDougald, who preceded him in death. He had one brother named Rufus McDougald who preceded him in death, as well.

He was a proud graduate of the Laurinburg Institute. After graduation, he loyally served as a sailor in the US Navy, by helping to defend our country during World War II from 9/9/43-3/13/46. He was honorably discharged and started to work in the water department for the City of Baltimore, Maryland. He quickly advanced his career there, became a foreman, and remained in their employ until his retirement.

After retiring, he returned to Scotland County and was an avid exerciser with other senior citizens. He enjoyed volunteering his time at the Richmond County flea market, and the Goodwill. He loved to eat, laugh, dance, and talk. He loved traveling with his family to places like OH, WV, FL, MD, GA, and NY, NJ, Washington, and SC. 

He joined Laurel Hill First Baptist Church, and became an active and faithful member, where he held the position of Superintendent for over 30 years. He was happy to attend weekly bible study gatherings and Sunday school classes habitually. He eagerly spread his love of the Lord at his home church and various other churches.

Memories of Ernest will be cherished by his loving wife, Virginia of Laurel Hill, NC. Their relationship would’ve marked its 56th anniversary this year. Additionally, he leaves behind his adoring daughter, Melissa Barnes (Rick) of Raleigh, NC/Sacramento, CA; three treasured grandchildren, Genevieve, Janelle, and AJ of Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law, Nancy Leggette (Roy – deceased) of NY; brother & sister-in-law, William and Lucy Wright (both deceased); obliging cousins, Josh D. and Willie Mae Hayes of Laurel Hill, NC; numerous nieces & nephews, (specifically Alexis Pruden, Garrick & Florine Wright of Hamlet, NC); cousins, and friends.
